A one semester elective course that provides the foundation and prerequisite for all BHS journalism classes. This survey course will explore the "nuts and bolts" of modern mass communications. Students will explore typography, journalistic history. The Style Book, photography, layout, and basic reporting techniques. Students will sell ads for both BHS publications and write occasional stories for submission to The Cub Growl.
 

Advanced Journalism
Newspaper II
Grade Placement: 11-12
Credit: 1/2 - 1
Prerequisite: Journalism I, ability to type proficiently and Journalism advisor approval

This exciting and demanding class is formulated to advance students to the next logical step after Journalism I - producing readable publication. Students will create the monthly Cub Growl in the same manner as a professional newspaper. Editors and reporters will design the paper, sell ads, write news stories, features, and editorials, meet deadlines, and deliver the final product to their peers. Although the course meets during regularly scheduled class periods, course will also meet outside of regular school hours with REQUIRED meetings scheduled in order to meet publication deadlines.

Communication Applications emphasizes the application of communication skills in business, professional, and societal settings. This course includes oral presentations. It concentrates on the communication process, interpersonal communication, and group communication.

Brenham staffers establish yearbook coverage, layout, advertising and marketing. Editors guide staffers, participate in the writing of headlines, photo captions, stories, and selling advertising. Although the course meets during regularly scheduled class, it also requires considerable after school hour participation.

Prerequisite: Yearbook I and approval of Journalism advisor

Debate I, II, III
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1/2/ - 1
Prerequisite: Previous Debate Class

These courses will examine the structure of various types of debate. Logical and critical thinking, RESEARCH and oral presentation will be developed, with U.I.L. competition being stressed. Strong reading skills advisable.
 

Introduction to Media Technology
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit 1/2

Learn career opportunities and demands in making a newscast. Provide the skills and knowledge of making a newscast. Students will video tape, interview and be tested on equipment, careers and words used in the professional business. Criteria includes: meeting deadlines, quantity and quality of work, attendance and participation. NOTE: Student is responsible for transportation to and from assignments.

Media Technology
Grade Placement: 10-12
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Introduction to Media Technology

Learn career opportunities and demands in making a newscast. Produce a 6 minute Newscast. Students will learn workplace skills in the news media. Promote the spirit of teamwork and train on how to get the job done. After class hours to video school activities. Criteria includes: meeting deadlines, quantity and quality of work, and attendance and participation. NOTE: Student is responsible for transportation to and from assignments.
