Introduction to Health
Science Technology
Grade Placement: 9-12 1 credit Introduction to Health Science Technology is a course designed to give an overview of therapeutic, diagnostic, environmental, and information systems of the health care industry. The course focuses on the history of health care , ethical and legal responsibilities, leadership development, and health careers exploration. Students will develop a concept of health and wellness from the viewpoint of a health care consumer as well as a future health professional. Current and future trends of the health industry are integrated throughout the course. Successful completion of Health Science Technology I waives the required 1'2 credit for health. Grade Placement: 10-12 1 credit Prerequisite: Introduction to Health Science Technology recommended (but not required) and Biology, as a prerequisite or concurrent enrollment. A course designed to develop knowledge and skills in communication, ethical and legal responsibilities, technology, employability, and interpersonal dynamics in health careers. Medical terminology in relation to the human body in health and disease is introduced. Entry level skills in patient care, safety, first aid and CPR prepare the student for HST II, either in clinical rotation or in career preparation, providing clinical or work-based experiences in the health care industry. Successful completion of Health Science Technology I waives the required 1/2 credit for health. Grade Placement: 10-12 1/2 credit A course designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. By relating terms to body systems, students identify proper use of words in a medical environment. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student's ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health care. Tech Prep articulated class - 3 hours Blinn College credit possible. Grade Placement: 11-12 1/2 credit This course an introduction to mental health services, careers, history, agencies and current issues, and the difference between functional and dysfunctional behaviors. Students develop an awareness of the factors that affect mental health by exploring traditional and emerging treatment modalities. Grade Placement: 11-12 Prerequisite: Health Science Technology I, Biology,and instructor approval.
A two-hour class that combines classroom study with clinical rotations in
a hospital/health agency. Classroom studies will continue in effective
communication skills, ethical and legal responsibilities, technology, employability
and interpersonal relationships, medical terminology, and safety and standard
precautions. The student will spend approximately 4-6 hours of class
time per week observing, demonstrating and using the entry level skills
learned in the classroom in the various departments of health care agencies.
