Integrated Physics and Chemistry
Grade Placement: 9 1 credit
Introduces the student to the basic concepts of physics and chemistry. Topics include safety, scientific methods, measurement, mechanics, optics, acoustics, electricity, magnetism and the basic concepts of general chemistry.
Advanced Integrated Physics and Chemistry
Grade Placement: 9 1 weighted credit Prerequisite: Junior High Science Teacher approval
In addition to the TEKS, the student will be introduced to the basic connections between physics and chemistry. An individual research project is required.
Biology 1
Grade Placement: 9-10 1 credit Prerequisite: Physical Science
Students will expand their knowledge of scientific processes as they apply to the nature of living systems. Extensive discussions and many lab activities relating to biology concepts, terms and theories provide a foundation for understanding the living world.
Pre Advanced Placement Biology 1
Grade Placement: 9-10 1 weighted credit Prerequisite: Science teacher approval/IPC
For the student who plans to take Adbanced Placement Biology in their Junior or Senior year, this course is designed to prepare the student for college-level biology lecture and laboratory work. Covered will be the fundamental areas of biology with a more extensive approach. Laboratories will mesh with the AP Biology laboratories. An independent research project is required.
Advanced Placement Biology
Grade Placement: 11-12 1 weighted credit Prerequisite: Biology I, Chemistry I-Teacher approval required
The College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Biology program provides able and motivated students with the opportunity to pursue college level biological studies. Students may opt to take the AP Biology examination in May in order to obtain credit and/or placement in college. The three main areas covered are molecules and cells, genetics and evolution, and organisms and populations which include twelve quantitative laboratory exercises.
Chemistry
Grade Placement: 10-12 1 credit Prerequisite: Algebra II or currently enrolled
This course is designed to give a basic knowledge of atomic structure as it relates to the chemical behavior of elements. The student will us critical thinking and scientific problem solving to make informed decisions. Laboratory activities are utilized in helping students understand chemistry.
Pre Advanced Placement Chemistry I
Grade Placement: 10-12 1 weighted credit Prerequisite: Algebra Ii or currently enrolled plus science teacher approval.
For the student who plans to take AP Chemistry in their junior or senior year, this course is designed to prepare the student for college level chemistry lecture and laboratory work. Covered will be the fundamental areas of chemistry with a more extensive approach. Laboratories will mesh with the AP Chemistry laboratories. An independent research project is required.
Advanced Placement Chemistry
Grade Placement: 11-12 1 weighted credit Prerequisite: Chemistry I, Algebra 2 - teacher approval required
The College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry program provides able and motivated students with an opportunity to pursue college level chemistry studies. Students may opt to take the AP Chemistry exam in May in order to obtain credit and/or placement at college. AP Chemistry is an in-depth study of chemical concepts and principles encountered in Chemistry I. It also integrates the specialized areas of chemistry such as organic chemistry, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and nuclear chemistry.
Principles
of Technology
(Physics
in work clothes)
Grade Placement: 10-12 1 credit Prerequisite: One science and Algebra I
An applied physics course designed to provide a study in force, work, rate, resistance, energy, power, and force transformers as applied to mechanical, fluid, thermal, and electrical energy that comprise simple and technological devices and equipment. The course reinforces the math applications a student needs to understand and apply the principles studied.
Advanced Physics
Grade Placement: 11-12 1 weighted credit Prerequisite: Algebra II
This course is the study of matter, energy, and the fundamental forces. Attention is given to mechanics, heat, waves, electromagnetism, and nuclear physics. Lab work explores laws and theories of physics. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and problem solving. An independent research project is required.
Advanced Placement Physics
Grade Placement: 11-12 1 weighted credit Prerequisite: Algebra II
The College Board's Advance Placement (AP) program provides able and motivated students the opportunity to pursue collge level physics studies. Students may opt to take the AP Physics-B Examination in May in order to obtain credit and/or placement in college. AP Physics is an in-depth study of the laws that govern the physical world and the mathematics behind them. Lab work will be used to reinforce the concepts. Major concepts include mechanics, energy, waves, nuclear physics, and relativity.
Anatomy and Physiology
Grade Placement: 11-12 1 credit Prerequisite: Biology I
This course is a one year course consisting of the study of the body systems, which starts with a review of cellular organelle functions and tissue layer functions. This builds a foundation for the study of higher level organ systems and functions. Anatomy and Physiology provides a firm foundation for students with an interest in the sciences and career goals such as medicine, dentistry, physical and occupational thereapy, emergeny/first-aid, and athletic training.
