Special Services Course Descriptions
ENGLISH Basic English
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1This course is designed for the student who can read basic sight words at a third grade or higher level. Emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills. Various types of reading materials are used to develop skills in decoding and comprehension, main idea, cause and effect, fact and opinion, sequencing and drawing conclusions. Writing skills addressed include sentence and paragraph structure, basic grammar, capitalization and spelling.
Modified Aommunication Applications
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit 1/2Comunications Applications emphasizes the application of communication skills in business, professional, and social settings. This course includes oral presentations. It concentrates on the communication process, interpersonal communication, and group communication.
MATHBasic Math
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1This course covers basic operations with whole numbers and decimals including the place value system. Basic skills are taught including addition, subtraction, mixed numbers and reduction of fractions. The course includes basic geometry and math of money skills.
Basic Math of Models
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1Math of Models is designed to bring together application and theory in a real life format. Students enrolled should have working knowledge in addition, subtraction, multiplication. and division. Initial lessons include hourly wages, fraction reviews, basic graphs and shapes progressing to personal taxes, percents, analyzing graphs, and basic geometry.
Pre-Algebra
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1This course is designed to prepare students for Algebra 1, and includes a study of properties and operations with real numbers, including rational expressions, ratio and proportions, and a basic study of linear equations.
BASIC SCIENCE
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1Science curriculum will alternate each year in the following order. Physical Science; Health, Biology. Students will expand their knowledge of scientific processes as they apply to the nature of living systems.
BASIC SOCIAL STUDIES
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1Social Studies curriculum will alternate each year in the following order: World Geography, US History, Government / Economics.
This class provides instruction in skills which include terms relating to direction, states, capitols, explorers, regions, presidents and political parties.
HEALTH AND P.E.
Modified Foundations / Health
Grade Placememt 9-12
Credit: 1This is a modified course which meets the requirements of both the state mandated health class and foundaitons of fitness. Students are enrolled through the ARD process.
Adaptive Physical Education
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit 1Designed to give the student skills to participate in, and enjoy the leisure activities that the community has to offer. Students learn different sports and activities based on their interests, and what is available to them within the community.
VOCATIONAL ELECTIVES
Computer Basics
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1This course develops psychomotor skill in operating the keyboard as well as achieving acceptable speed and accuracy levels; provides instruction in the basics of computer operation; provides instruction in the production of letters, memos and business communications; includes skill development in proofreading, spelling, word division, punctuation, and correction techniques. The year long course is designed to provide basic computer skills and to develop skills, which prepare students for Keyboarding (offered through the Career and Technology Department). This class meets state technology requirements.
Keyboarding CTED
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit: 1A course for academically disadvantaged students to develop psychomotor skills in operating the keyboard and achieving acceptable speed and accuracy levels; provides instruction in formatting of basic documents for both personal/business use and opportunities for students to apply key-boarding skills in real life situations. Provides instruction in the production of letters, manuscripts, tabulations, business communicaitons, reports/themes/composition at the keyboard; includes skill development in proofreading, spelling, word division, punctiuation, and correction techniques.
Employment Training
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1This program is designed to provide hands on instruction in the world of employment. Classroom instructions include personal fact sheets, job applications, employer / employee relations and workplace needs. Students receive non-paid supervised job training at community sites. Emphasis is placed on becoming a good employee.The need for positive attitude and good work habits are also stressed.
VAC (Vocational Adjustment Class) Lab
Grade Placement: 10-12
Credit: 1This course is geared towards teaching the necessary skills for obtaining and maintaining employment in the community. Emphasis is placed on attitudes, work habits and behaviors in the workplace. The curriculum addresses job search, interviewing, completing applications, pre-employment forms / tests, writing resumes, problem solving in the workplace, getting along with others, employee rights, employer expectations, how to get promotions, and how to change jobs. Further study includes career exploration, good citizenship and leadership training. (Repeat ninth graders may enroll with special permission).
VAC Cooperative Education Program WORK / STUDY
Grade Placement 11-12 / 1 +Prerequisites: 1) Must enroll in VAC LAB course
2) Must be currently employed
3) Must have means of transportationStudents enrolled in this program can earn credits towards graduation through attending school part of the day and working apart of the day. Vocational training and job experience are combined with academic courses that lead to maximum development of employment potential. The program is designed to help transition students into the world of work with support from the VAC coordinator and the Job Coach. Enrollment is based on individual needs and ARD Decisions. Students and parents are given a VAC Handbook and must agree to accept the various responsibilities listed therein.

Practical Horticultural Sciences, CTED
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit 1/2 - 1Introduction to Horticulture is an activity based course introducing students to careers in horticultural systems. Students will acquire knowledge and skills regarding vegetable garden preparation, upkeep and production, selection of seasonal plant varieties, pest management and composting. Students will also identify and maintain hand and power tools and other related equipment, along with the safe use thereof.
Horticultural Plant Production, CTED
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1/2 -1Horticultural Plant Production is a classroom / laboratory oriented course designed to address skills related to the production of seasonal vegetable and greehouse plants. Preparation for careers in the field of horticulture will also be of key interest. Plant identificaiton, tool and equipment identification, along with safe use should be mastered. Students will take part in seeding, propagating, fertilizing, composting and management of horticultural plants.
Practical personal and Family Development CTED
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit 1Designed to use techniques appropriate to the population included in the Life Skills Program. Classroom / community based instruction in all phases of home economics, supervised job training skills at community sites. Areas of instruction include foods/nutrition, child development, consumer economics, personal relationships. Emphasis placed on taking responsibility for actions, personal decision making survival skills, career opportunities, requirements for surviving in the workplace.
Personal and Family Development CTED
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1This laboratory course is designed to use techniques appropriate to the population included in the Special Services Program. Included will be classroom instruction and community based instruction in all phases of home economics as well as supervised job training skills at community sites. Areas of instruction will include foods and nutrition, clothing, child development, consumer economics, personal relationships and management. Emphasis will be placed on taking responsibility for actions, personal decision making, survival skills, career opportunites, and requirements for surviving in the workplace.
Preparation for Parenting CTED / Child Development CTED
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit: 1Preparation for Parenting CTED is designed to use techniques appropriate to the population included in the special services program. Includes classroom/community based instruction to develop knowledge and skills in preparation to function effectively in the role of parent or caregiver. Content stresses parental responsibilities, child guidance techniques, parents as positive role models, parents as their child's first teacher, parenting practices which promote a child's development, health, safety, and well-being. Other topics managing family crises, managing multiple roles of family members throughout the life cycle, career preparation.
Child Development CTED is designed to use techniques appropriate to the populaiton included in the special services program. Includes classroom/community based instruction that will focus on knowledge and skills related to the development, care, guidance, and protection of children. Instruction addresses the principles and procedures for promoting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of young children, including those with special needs. Other topics: characteristics of quality child care, career options related to the care and education of children, management of multiple family, career, and community roles.
Introduction to Electrical / Electronics Career CTED
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit: 1/2A cluster course for academically disadvantaged students designed to familiarize students with introductory skills and basic understanding of career opportunities and training requirements in six fundamental career clusters related to electrical/electronics, and computer electronics. Students will acquire skills which are immediately useful. Entrepeneurship, safety, interviewing skills and leadership training are included. Curriculum may be modified to meet individual student needs.
Introduction to Construction Careers CTED
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit: 1/2A cluster course for academically disadvantaged students designed to familiarize students with introductory skills and basic understanding of career opportunities and training requirements in six fundamental construction-related careers: air-conditioning and refrigeration, bricklaying/stone masonry, carpentry, residential electrician, painting and decorating, and plumbing/pipefitting. Instruction also includes entrepeneurship, safety, and leadership training. Curriculum may be modified to meet individual student needs.
Building Maintenance I CTED
Grade Placement: 9-12
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: ARD committee approvalA cluster course for academically disadvantaged students designed to prepare students with employment skills which are transferable and immediately useful to keep "at risk" students in school by providing successful educational experiences, and to prepare students for enrollment in other career and technology programs. Includes a basic understanding of career opportunities and training requirements in five fundamental occupational areas: carpentry, electrical trades, painting, plumbing, and building cleanliness and sanitation. Entrepreneurship, leadership, and safety are included. Curriculum may be modified to meet individual student needs.
Life Management
Grade Placement 9-12
Credit: 1The Life Management Curriculum address academics in a highly structured enviroment. Along with the academics, vocational skills, social and recreational skills are included. Behavior is addressed through a leveling system. Students begin the program by attending these classes on a full time basis until they earn the right to take less restrictive classes on the BHS campus. The Life Management Unit meets at the Brenham Alternative campus. Students are enrolled in these classes through the ARD process.

Behavior is addressed through a leveling system.
