April is Occupational Therapy Month and Brenham ISD celebrates our two registered occupational therapists, Lorri Cales and Destre Koehl. Our occupational therapists help Brenham ISD students by developing physical abilities, building social skills, promoting healthy lifestyles and facilitating success in school with customized strategies. We thank these two valued staff members for their commitment to excellence for ALL students in our district!
Lorri Cales, OTR is a 1992 graduate from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy. She spent 15 years at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. She worked on the Rehabilitation Unit treating patients with a large variety of neurological and physical injuries. She also gained experience with traumatic hand and arm injuries, many of these were work related. She also worked several years providing home health services in the Temple and Waco area. After relocating to Brenham with her family, she worked one year at Trinity Medical Center, outpatient rehab and the local nursing homes. In 2007, she took her current position with Brenham Independent School District, providing O.T. services for nine years to students ranging from age 3 to 21 at Brenham Elementary, Krause Elementary, Brenham High School, and Toy Box. These students are seen for fine motor skills, sensory needs, and self help skills so that they are functional within the educational setting.
Destre Koehl, OTR has been an occupational therapist in the school districts for 17 years. She is a graduate of Brenham High School, Blinn College, and attended Texas A&M University until her acceptance into the Occupational Therapy program. She is a graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. She first worked for Giddings Special Education Cooperative for five years. The Giddings cooperative included seven school districts; Giddings, Burton, Round Top-Carmine, Fayetteville, Lexington, McDade, and Dime Box. She also worked for Harris County Department of Education in Katy ISD for 2 years. In 2008, her journey brought her back to her hometown where she is currently employed at Brenham ISD. She provides therapy to students at the Alton Elementary, Brenham Middle School, and Brenham Junior High Schools in the areas of fine motor skills, including handwriting, sensory needs, and self help skills. Her goal is to help these students to be functional within the educational environment.
