Summer greetings! Today is a great day to be a Cub!
The 2016-17 school year was a memorable one with numerous successes, and we are so proud of the many accomplishments of our students. Our graduating seniors have amassed record numbers of scholarships, and accepted offers to attend prestigious universities such as The University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Rice University, Baylor University, Prairie View A&M University, Blinn College, University of Houston, Sam Houston State University, and Southern Methodist University. Equally as exciting are our graduates who have joined the armed forces to serve our country and those who immediately entered the workforce. Brenham ISD boasts a 96% high school graduation rate, one that is significantly higher than the state or national average!
Summer school, JAM, and SMART programs are all currently underway. Students are learning new and exciting material as they participate in fun-filled field trips to various learning venues like the Houston Zoo and Houston Children's Museum. Our athletics and weight training department is buzzing with hard-working student-athletes preparing for another season of fierce Texas UIL 5A competition.
Parents play a critical role during the summertime, as well. We want to encourage parents to work with their children to prevent the "summer slide". Take full advantage of the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library to check out books, participate in the literacy programs that are offered, and stay connected to learning. Daily reading is a great way to prevent the summer slide! We also suggest that parents limit access to the Internet, social media, and video games over the summer. We live in a fast-paced technological world, and numerous external forces are vying for our students' attention; however, reading for pleasure will never be an outdated intellectual exercise. We want to create lifelong learners who enjoy reading, writing, and thinking critically.
The Brenham Early Childhood Learning Center (BECLC), our newest school, is scheduled to open this summer to house all of our 4-year old prekindergarten students under one roof. We are excited that Mrs. Toni Schwartz will be the principal of this new campus. Brenham ISD is also exploring the possibility of offering a tuition-based prekindergarten option to parents whose students who do not qualify for the program. Interested parents may contact the district office at 979-277-3700.
We are tremendously grateful to the Brenham ISD Board of Trustees who recently voted unanimously to give all BISD staff a 4% (mid-point) salary increase, and an additional $300 per year to offset rising insurance premiums. The board sincerely appreciates the professional commitment and dedication of our staff, and they continue to explore ways to offer the best comprehensive benefits package our district can afford. The board made its decision to approve raises, even after carefully considering that the district will not receive any additional revenue or "state aid" from the Texas Legislature over the next fiscal biennium.
We have six-weeks of summer vacation left before the first day of school on August 16, 2017. Be safe, drink lots of water, limit your exposure to the sun, and enjoy relaxing with family and friends. We wish you all a happy Fourth of July and we look forward to seeing you in August!
