Let's be on the watch!

Today is a great day to be a Cub!

I want to take a few moments to update you on a new social issue that is plaguing schools across our nation and our state. Vaping is a relatively new phenomenon that has many teenagers using tobacco products by inhaling vapor from an electronic cigarette. A 2017 National Institutes of Health study found that more than one in four high school seniors reported vaping in the previous year, while 16.6 percent said they had vaped in the previous month. More than 6 percent of eighth graders also reported vaping in the previous month.

Vaping has also been deemed as a “gateway” to other, more dangerous, drugs. In the larger cities to our east and west, schools are experiencing students vaping liquid marijuana, which is not only illegal, but incredibly dangerous.

Our students and community must understand that, according to the Student Code of Conduct, tobacco of any kind is prohibited on all BISD campuses. FNCD (Legal)

Please help us keep our schools safe by regularly checking restrooms, parking lots, and other communal areas in which our students generally convene. Also, I am asking that our administrators help us by making daily public service announcements about the consequences of vaping, or using any illegal drugs, on school district property. Students will be charged for breaking the law and sent to the district’s alternative education program if found guilty.

Our children are our most prized treasures. It is our job and personal responsibility to teach them right from wrong and to redirect them, as needed. Together we can make a difference because we are a UNITED Brenham community.

Thank you,

Dr. Walter Jackson
