Brenham Junior High School seventh grader Sofia Martinez has been invited to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM at Rice University in Houston, Texas in June. Martinez was nominated for the program by Brenham Middle School teacher Angela Powell and was selected based on her academic potential and interest in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM program helps students develop critical thinking skills through hands-on experiences using cutting-edge technology. The program gives students a head start on planning for the future while having fun and collaborating with other students from across the nation.
Martinez is currently enrolled in the AVID program at Brenham Junior High School. AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, seeks to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities.
Martinez says she’s both nervous and excited about the opportunity, but very interested to explore the different career opportunities that are available.
