Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college and career readiness program designed to help students develop the skills needed for academic success. AVID focuses on building strong study habits, organization, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. Through rigorous coursework, goal setting, and college exploration, AVID empowers students to take ownership of their learning and prepare for future educational opportunities.
  • AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college and career readiness program offered at Brenham Junior High School and Brenham High School. The program is designed for students who have the potential and determination to attend college and are willing to challenge themselves academically. AVID helps students build the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to succeed in rigorous coursework and prepare for future educational opportunities.

  • Students in the AVID program enroll in an AVID elective course during the regular school day. In this class, students develop essential academic skills such as organization, note-taking, critical thinking, collaboration, and time management. The AVID curriculum emphasizes strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support success across all subject areas.

  • Students apply to join the AVID program, and the selection process may include a written application, interview, and review of academic records such as grades, assessment scores, attendance, and behavior. Students who are accepted into AVID commit to enrolling in rigorous coursework, including Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) and Advanced Placement (AP) classes when appropriate.

  • AVID students participate in structured tutorial sessions, collaborative study groups, and activities that expose them to college and career opportunities. These experiences help students develop strong academic habits while learning more about the steps required to pursue higher education.

  • The goal of the AVID program is for students to remain in the program through high school graduation and be prepared to attend and succeed in a four-year college or university. Students are expected to maintain strong academic performance, demonstrate positive behavior, attend school regularly, and serve as role models for their peers.
