Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that affects reading. It is typically characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, spelling, and decoding words. These challenges occur even when students receive appropriate instruction and have average or above-average intelligence. With the right support and instruction, students with dyslexia can develop strong reading and writing skills and experience academic success.

Brenham ISD follows the guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency to identify and support students who may have characteristics of dyslexia. A Section 504 Committee or an Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee reviews student data to determine whether a dyslexia evaluation is needed. This process may include reviewing classroom performance, intervention progress, vision and hearing screening results, and parent input. If the committee determines that an evaluation is appropriate, parent permission is obtained before formal assessments are conducted. These assessments measure skills related to reading, language processing, and written language. After the evaluation is completed, the committee reviews the results and works with parents to determine appropriate services and develop a support plan for the student.

Students who qualify for dyslexia services receive specialized instruction designed to support the development of reading, spelling, and writing skills. Instruction is typically provided in small group settings using research-based, multisensory approaches. Brenham ISD uses the Basic Language Skills and Multisensory Reading and Spelling programs developed by the Neuhaus Education Center to support students with dyslexia. At the elementary and intermediate levels, dyslexia services are generally provided through a pull-out program, while students at the junior high and high school levels may receive instruction through a scheduled class period.

The decision to exit dyslexia services is made by the Section 504 Committee or ARD Committee. The committee reviews a variety of factors, including student progress, completion of the instructional program, parent input, and performance on state reading assessments. The goal of dyslexia services is to provide students with the tools and strategies they need to become confident and successful readers.
