Brenham ISD students and staff "horse around"

Several Brenham ISD special education students and staff were able to enjoy a unique experience at Silver Lining Therapy, LLC on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Students were treated to a  unique, effective occupational therapeutic experience involving horses, a donkey and even a visit from the house cat. Students performed tasks such as learning how to approach a horse, how a horse uses its senses to observe people, the names and body parts of the horse, and how they are the same and different from people. Students were able to handle the horses by leading them, playing games like "red light, green light" while leading and stopping the horse, a match game, and even leading the horses through an arena area with barrels set in a barrel racing pattern. Along with the handling of the horses, students were able to get up close and personal with the horses by learning their name, giving commands to the horses, and also grooming the horses.

After a busy morning of working with the horses and practicing various movements and skills, the students were treated to a picnic lunch in the barn. Students were able to practice learning their letters and numbers, along with following directions and expanding their attention span during the activities.

Silver Lining Therapy, LLC is owned and operated by Karen M. Gardner, OTR, Hippotherapy Clinical Specialist and is located in Brenham, Texas. Her staff of volunteers and family members were glad to assist the staff and students with a great morning of "horsing around."
